The Australian Government has imposed sanctions on a Melbourne aged care provider because it failed to address an issue of concern identified in late 2009.
The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency found that the home, run by the Lions Club of Sunbury, had inadequate systems and processes for care staff and insufficient information systems.
However the Department of Health and Ageing stressed that there was no immediate or serious risk to the home’s 26 residents.
As a result of the sanctions, the facility is now required to appoint an approved nurse adviser for six months to ensure compliance is met.
The accreditation agency and the department will continue to monitor the nursing home closely.
“When aged care providers fail to meet their responsibilities the government will act to protect our frail and elderly citizens,” said the Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon.
“This government is committed to continuing to work in partnership with older Australians, their families, staff, unions and providers to improve the quality of aged care in Australia.”
